WASHINGTON — David Sorensen, a White Residence speechwriter, resigned on Friday after a news report detailed accusations from a former wife who stated he had abused her during their marriage.
His resignation came two days following Rob Porter, the White Home staff secretary, submitted his own resignation right after his two former wives publicly accused him of getting abusive to them when they have been married.
In an interview in The Washington Post, Mr. Sorensen’s former wife, Jessica Corbett, detailed a volatile two-and-a-half-year marriage in which Mr. Sorensen ran more than her foot even though driving a vehicle and place out a lit cigarette on her hand. Their divorce became final last fall. Ms. Corbett stated she described those episodes to the F.B.I. final fall as it was conducting a background check of Mr. Sorensen, according to The Post.
Mr. Sorensen denied Ms. Corbett’s account, and insisted that she was the abuser. Responding to a Facebook message on Friday evening, Mr. Sorensen known as his former wife “creative” and later emailed a lengthy statement disputing her account. In the statement, he called her claims “malicious” and with out “authentic evidence.” He also incorporated photographs that he stated had been proof of injuries she left him with throughout confrontations.
He added, “Although I had hoped to never have to believe about or discuss the woman who spent years physically attacking, threatening and lying about me — and relentlessly and cruelly bombarding me with unimaginable fits of rage — this incident is an opportunity to highlight the grossly underreported and unacknowledged problem of female-on-male domestic violence.
Asked why he did not fight to hold his job, Mr. Sorensen said in a Facebook message: “I didn’t want the White Property to have to deal with this distraction. It should be in a position to concentrate on continuing President Trump’s historic accomplishments for the American Individuals.”
A former policy adviser to Gov. Paul Richard LePage of Maine, Mr. Sorensen began functioning for the Trump administration in May possibly. Julie Rabinowitz, a spokeswoman for Mr. LePage, said in a statement on Friday that the governor had been unaware of the accusations, and that none had been created for the duration of Mr. Sorensen’s time in that workplace.
“Without an allegation or evidence, there was nothing upon which the governor could take action,” she wrote.
In a statement, Raj Shah, the deputy White Property press secretary, confirmed Mr. Sorensen’s departure.
“Before we were contacted by the media, we discovered final evening that there had been allegations,” Mr. Shah stated. “We quickly confronted the staffer, he denied the allegations and he resigned right now.”
Like Ms. Corbett, Mr. Porter’s former wives also said they had told the F.B.I. about becoming abused — in their instances, a lot more than a year ago. But the background checks were nonetheless underway for each males at the time of their resignations, and there is no indication that the White Residence performed its own evaluation of either aide.
