WASHINGTON — President Trump complained on Saturday about allegations that he stated have been destroying the lives of those accused — appearing to express doubts about the #MeToo movement right after the resignations this week of two White Home aides facing claims of domestic violence.
In an early morning Twitter post, Mr. Trump did not name the former aides, but stated: “Peoples lives are becoming shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are accurate and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for somebody falsely accused — life and profession are gone. Is there no such factor any longer as Due Process?”
Mr. Trump’s claim ran counter to the White House’s portrayal of its actions in response to the abuse allegations. Administration officials maintained that they acted decisively in the instances of Rob Porter, the staff secretary, and David Sorensen, a speechwriter, each of whom stepped down after their former wives accused them of emotional and physical abuse.
But the president’s defense is in keeping with the White House’s initially defensive reaction to the charges against Mr. Porter — as nicely as his tendency to dismiss allegations made against him and other strong males by girls who saythey had been sexually harassed.
The White Home chief of employees, John F. Kelly, and the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, both staunchly defended Mr. Porter initially, with Ms. Sanders saying Mr. Trump and Mr. Kelly had “full confidence” in his performance.
In Mr. Porter’s case, a single of his former wives, Jennifer Willoughby, obtained a restraining order against him, whilst the other, Colbie Holderness, presented a photograph of herself with a black eye, which she stated came from being hit by Mr. Porter whilst the couple was on holiday in Italy.
The F.B.I. and the White House knew of these charges for months, and Mr. Porter’s application for a security clearance had been held up since of them. Mr. Kelly has told his staff he ordered Mr. Porter to be fired 40 minutes following finding out of the charges against him, an assertion that other officials disputed.
In the case of Mr. Sorensen, his former wife, Jessica Corbett, told F.B.I. agents conducting a background verify on him that he had run more than her foot even though driving a car and extinguished a cigarette on her hand for the duration of a turbulent two-and-a-half-year marriage.
For his component, Mr. Trump praised Mr. Porter, saying on Friday, “He did a extremely excellent job when he was in the White Residence, and we want him properly.” The president created no mention of the girls Mr. Porter is said to have abused.
Mr. Trump’s tweet also echoed his response last year to allegations that Roy S. Moore, the Republican candidate for the Senate seat in Alabama, had molested underage girls. Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Moore, who lost the campaign to the Democrat, Doug Jones.
The president’s inclination to reject accusations against him goes beyond those lodged by ladies, like, most notably, allegations that his presidential campaign colluded with the Russians.
Earlier on Saturday, Mr. Trump cited a report in The New York Instances that American intelligence agents had provided $100,000 to a shadowy Russian who claimed to have compromising material on Mr. Trump, as nicely as cyberweapons that had been stolen from the National Safety Agency.
In a tweet, Mr. Trump stated, “According to the @nytimes, a Russian sold phony ‘secrets’ on Trump to the U.S.” He added, “I hope men and women are now seeing & understanding what is going on right here. It is all now starting to come out — DRAIN THE SWAMP!”
