The Fairburn Agate of the Black Hills: 100 Unique Storied Agates

The Fairburn Agate of the Black Hills: 100 Unique Storied Agates

A Fairburn Agate Afternoon…
For American collectors the so-known as Fairburn agates represent the ideal variety of an agate beside the Laker agates. Fish Eye Agate, sub-variety of Lake Superior Agate, adv., The Gem Exchange, The Mineralogist, v. 7, no. two, p. 185. The term “fish eye” (sic.) is utilized in an advertizement for Flame Agate from Mexico by Southern Gem and Mineral Company. See comments under flame agate. Zeitner (1964, p. 350) employed this term to describe chacledony nodules with small bright spots identified close to Villa Ahumada, Chihuahua, Mexico. This could be a synnonym of Bean Agate in the context employed by Zeitner, but Cross (1996, p. 61) suggests that these are a nodular range of Apache Agate that have tiny red or orange spherulites in a clear matrix. Miller and Olsen (1967, p. 1314) used this term informally to describe pink, purple, and cream colored circular patches in agates from near Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico. Cross (1996, p. 61) named this a sub-assortment of Apache Agate that tiny spherulites in a clear blue agate.Men and women wanted to know who identified it and exactly where. They got excited when I told them how my granddaughter, just 8 years old at the time, prayed to uncover a rock and how she casually found it in a neighbor’s landscaping gravel. 1 man encouraged me to take it to Roger Clark, an expert on Fairburn agates. His car was down a small farther.Fairburn agates are a form of microcrystalline chalcedony, one hundred% silicon dioxide with a hardness of six ½ to 7 on the Mohs scale. They are also referred to as fortification agates since of their banding. They have been formed about 300 million years ago in an ancient limestone bed of an inland sea. To hunt Fairburn agates requires looking at each rock and turning numerous with a rock pick. It is strictly surface hunting no digging, mining, cracking or breaking rocks. The photos shown are precisely the way the agates were found, with no cutting, polishing or tumbling having been done. One more agate from the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, with a related shape and size. It lacks the general dark coloring of the Easter Islands Head’ agate, but you can see a hint of a Fairburn pattern in the pebbly outer shell of this a single as effectively. This 1 is also headed to the polisher, and my guess is that polishing will also reveal a gorgeous Fairburn underneath. The value of a Fairburn agate is determined by size (most are small—only a few ounces), color, good quality of banding, quantity of bands, shape of the fortification pattern, and condition (fracture totally free). As far as I know, a Fairburn agate nonetheless has the record for the highest priced agate sold on EBay. Many years ago, a Fairburn agate sold for $13,000.fairburn agate fields south dakotaIn the U.S., fine Agate comes from the Dryhead Agate Mine, Carbon Co., Montana Fairburn, Custer Co., South Dakota Baker ranch, Luna Co., New Mexico and from the shores of Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. “Thunder Egg” Agates are abundant from Jefferson Co., Oregon. The finest iridescent Fire Agate comes from the Black Hills, Graham County, Arizona and in Mexico in Aguascalientes.

Fairburns are valued for their colorful fortification patterns with an abundance of reds (iron oxide), oranges (iron oxide) and blacks (manganese oxides). The derivation of their name comes from the little community of Fairburn, positioned south along I-90, ~25 miles, of Fast City close to SD 79. This region is also probably the easiest for collectors to locate. Agate hunters ought to travel east from Fairburn along French Creek Road (excellent gravel road) for about 12 miles to a sign locating the original collecting location managed by the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. Even though known to collectors for decades, these Fairburn beds still yield an occasional agate, and as several colorful specimens of jasper, quartz and chalcedony as can be carried out in your collecting bag.\n\nA genuine fairburn will have the conventional holly pattern, with distinct parallel banding. The exceptional specimen above shows the holly shape in numerous locations, as nicely as the distinct parallel banding, note the color adjustments in the agate. This fairburn agate is even much more beneficial as it is an artifact, and was employed as a tool by the Indians.Fish Egg Agate , South Dakota, Nebraska, reported west of Scenic, South Dakota, Zeitner, J. C., (1954, p. 9-ten 1959, p. 42-54). Also, adv., Allan Branham, The Mineralogist, v. 14, no. 9, p. 469. Zeitner (1964, p. 350) stated this was a term used locally in South Dakota to describe material with tiny, round brown, red, orange, yellow, or white spots that was collected from near Kadoka, Oelrich, Hot Springs, and Fairburn South Dakota. This material is a silicified oolite and has also be located in the basal Chadron Formation of Oligocene age in outcrops in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The term is probably now generic, referring to any agate with oolites. Clark (1998) has created a lengthy treatise on these stones and covers their sources, geographic and stratigraphic relationships.

Beautiful pictures with interesting descriptions for each. Personal details on finding or procuring each specimen. The photography is unsurpassed. Each agate has a name befitting its pattern…very interesting. Headed to South Dakota in September with very high hopes of finding just one small piece of Fairburn!
