Michael Wines, a national correspondent, recommends this from Aeon: &ldquoToss a baseball, and you can predict with precision exactly where it will land. Shoot photons at a wall with two slits, however, and you get a distinct outcome &mdash wondrous, illogical, impossible, a small terrifying &mdash that calls into question the very nature of existence. This pellucid examination of the central mystery of quantum physics is a fantastic study, accessible even by those of us, like me, who still can&rsquot calculate a square root.&rdquo

On this day in 1930, Laura Ingalls set a record for the quickest transcontinental flight across the U.S. by a woman: 30 hours and 27 minutes.

That was just one of Ms. Ingalls&rsquos many aerial achievements. The same year, she completed 714 barrel rolls &mdash a stunt combining a roll and a loop &mdash breaking the planet record. In March 1934, she became the first American lady to fly around South America.

&ldquoI wish an individual would wake me up and inform me it&rsquos accurate,&rdquo she said right after cruising over the Andes.

But her fame started to sour after she sprinkled antiwar pamphlets about the White Residence from her plane in 1939, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority to suspend her license.

In the thick of Planet War II, it emerged that she was a Nazi sympathizer and a German agent witnesses stated she took income from a German official and called Hitler a &ldquomarvelous man.&rdquo
