Conyers Does not Program to Resign Over Harassment Claims, Lawyer Says

WASHINGTON — Representative John Conyers Jr., the House’s longest-serving lawmaker, does not strategy to resign over accusations of sexual harassment despite facing a Home Ethics Committee investigation, his lawyer mentioned on Wednesday.

His lawyer, Arnold E. Reed, stated in a telephone interview that Mr. Conyers, 88, denied any wrongdoing and believed that some individuals suggesting that he step down, including fellow Democrats, had been scheming for years to push him out as the top Democrat on the Home Judiciary Committee.

Asked about the credibility of the accusations of harassment, which have been made by females who had been former staff members, Mr. Reed stopped brief of calling the women liars.

“You have to ask the females, are they lying or not,” Mr. Reed said. “Mr. Conyers has not engaged in sexual harassment or harassment otherwise with regard to any staffer that he has had.”

He recommended that several other folks in Washington, such as the president, would also have to resign were they to face repercussions more than comparable claims. President Trump himself has been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior, such as harassment and assault, as have other folks in Congress.

“If we are talking about resignation and resignation over allegations, then half the individuals in the Home, half the individuals in the Senate, like the president of the United States of America, would have to step aside, step down and or resign,” Mr. Reed stated.

Mr. Conyers, who has represented components of the Detroit region in the Residence considering that 1965, this week confirmed the settlement of a wrongful termination complaint in 2015 from a staff member who had accused him of sexual harassment.

The settlement was 1st reported by BuzzFeed News on Monday. The publication also obtained affidavits from other employees members who stated Mr. Conyers repeatedly harassed ladies operating for him through actions that included requests for sexual acts, contacting and transporting other females with whom they believed Mr. Conyers was having affairs, caressing their hands and rubbing their legs and backs in public.

Mr. Reed stated Mr. Conyers settled the claim due to the fact the lawmaker did not want to be “involved in protracted litigation” primarily based on “advice he received at the time.”

“It’s not a predicament where Mr. Conyers has mentioned that he did anything incorrect, that he admitted guilt or acknowledged duty for any allegations,” Mr. Reed mentioned.

Mr. Conyers has helped lead the Judiciary Committee for years, and some Democrats are eager to bring fresh blood into the committee’s best ranks for some time, 3 congressional officials mentioned. He has currently handed over much of the day-to-day committee function to staff aides and other Democratic members in recent years, and some have stated that Mr. Conyers usually seems disoriented.

On Wednesday, Mr. Reed indicated that the lawmaker was conscious of those desires, saying that individuals with “their agenda” had wanted Mr. Conyers to “step aside for a extended time and are seeking for any and each and every chance that would arise and if they do not arise, they develop them.”

But Mr. Conyers, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who also holds the venerated title of Dean of the Property, does not seem to be wavering.

“Naturally when you’re developing and you are obtaining progressively older, up in age, you could not walk as rapidly as you used to walk,” Mr. Reed stated. “At the finish of the day, John Conyers can do his job, has been carrying out his job and will continue to do his job.”
